Chapter 20

Carver had been in plenty of impossible situations.

This was different. He didn't have a team backing him up. He didn't have superior firepower he could call on to help him. He'd have to use all available resources to salvage the situation. And the biggest resource was sitting in the back yard.

Carver went to the small utility room. He yanked the dryer away from the wall. A flexible gas line was attached to the back. The dryer moved easily, so he yanked harder until the flexible gas line went taut. He kicked the hose hard. Kicked it again. It snapped loose. Propane flooded into the room.

He went to the kitchen. The gas range was at the end near the doorway. He pushed it away from the wall until the hose went tight. Then he kicked it free. Bullets whined past. Smashed into the door jamb. One crashed through the microwave hanging over the gas range. The digital display winked out.

That put a damper on his plan. But it was okay. There was a toaster in the corner. He tore up a paper towel and dropped the pieces into either side. Turned the level to extra crispy. Depressed the lever. It snapped into place. The toaster began to heat up. The air was so thick with gas, Carver was choking on it.

The back door used the same kind of deadbolt lock as the front door. Carver took the key from the inside. Quietly opened the door and closed it. He locked the deadbolt from the outside. Then he ran to the SUV, started it, and backed it away from the house and closer to the garage. From here he could see both the front and back of the house.

Seconds ticked past. Something crashed through the kitchen window. The Brazilian boys had figured out what was up. They'd charged into the front of the house. Discovered their predicament. Now they were trying to get out.

The toaster might not do the job quick enough.

A head poked out of the window. Carver fired a round. The head jerked back inside the window. Now he imagined them running to the back of the house. There were probably windows at the other end.

Windows shattered. Flames burst through the openings. A low boom echoed. The gas had ignited. The explosion wasn't enough to blow the house to pieces, but it was good enough to superheat the inside.

If the Brazilian boys were any good, they'd survived the blast. But the flames and smoke would get to them soon enough. Carver gunned the SUV. Drove through the front yard and spun around the side.

Sure enough, something was smashing out the back windows. Scarface's head poked out. Carver put a bullet into it. The head vanished inside. The other guy dove through the broken window. Guns blazing in each hand. Clothes on fire. Hair smoking. Screaming like a maniac.

It was a hell of a sight.

The passenger side of the SUV was facing the house. It ate the bullets. Carver slid out of the driver side and ducked behind the front tire.
